2. Which are the differences between male & female hair loss?

The basic differences between male and female hair loss are described as follows:

I. Female hair loss takes places in a circular sequence of phenomena and is more sensitive to external influences and medicines.

II. Regarding men, 3 factors are involved in bringing about androgenetic alopecia: genetic predisposition, androgens (male hormones) and aging. As for women, female pattern hair loss can appear at any age and is not always directly related with age.

III. In men affected by heredity, hormonal influence occurs due to testosterone and its derivatives, while in female hair loss other hormones have an impact on hair follicles.

IV. In women, vulnerable to hormones hair follicles are dispersed all over the scalp, while in men they lie on the front and upper part of the scalp.  Moreover, women usually preserve the frontal line as opposed to men where the frontal hairline is usually the first part of the scalp influenced by hair loss.

V. That means that hair loss in men and women is illustrated by different patterns (Male Pattern Hair Loss / Female Pattern Hair Loss).

VI. The most common cause of hair loss in women is hormonal disorders.

3. What are the causes of female hair loss?

The cause of hair loss can be different for every woman. The most important step before making any decision on hair loss treatment is to have a detailed and thorough diagnosis.

4. I do not experience hair loss but I am interested in keeping my hair healthy.

BERGMANN KORD is a specialized hair clinic and deals with all hair-related issues, both at a preventive and a therapeutic level. If you are interested in preserving your hair healthy or treating any hair problem (weakened hair, dehydrated, damaged by chemicals, excess oiliness, dry scalp etc), BERGMANN KORD offers the appropriate specialized treatments.

5. What is the mechanism of action in female hair loss?

The mechanism of female hair loss reminds this of men, but it is more complicated, as it involves the 2 steroid-metabolizing enzymes 5-a reductase and aromatase5-a reductase converts testosterone into DHT and aromatase converts androstenedione to estrone and estradiol. Aromatase has a protective role in female hair loss as it discourages the formation of DHT.
Female pattern hair loss affects women having high hormonal levels or even normal hormonal levels but in combination with heredity.
Women have lower levels of testosterone and 5-a reductase in their bodies and thus create smaller quantities of DHT, which is responsible for hair follicles shrinking. Moreover, the female body has higher levels of aromatase- which suppresses the severity of hair loss; there is 50% more aromatase in the frontal area of a woman΄s scalp than in other parts of her scalp.
This mechanism illustrates the different hair loss patterns between men and women, as well as the limited effectiveness of medicines that block DHT formation in women: Females usually experience diffuse hair loss with emphasis on the upper area of the scalp while preserving at the same time the frontal line.

7. What are the reasons for the higher percentage of female hair loss?

Hair loss has become a constituent of female reality; statistics reveal that approximately 15% of women experience a type of hair loss.
The diversification of women΄s roles is a factor of significant gravity. Most women are wifes, employees and mothers at the same time and strive to respond effectively to all their roles. As a result, they are under continuous stress, tension and have limited free time for personal relaxation. This way of life can exhaust the female body and also affect hair health.

In addition, many women are forced by high beauty standards to undergo strict diets, which lead to a deficiency in vitamins, proteins, enzymes, minerals and amino acids, elements that are all too essential for healthy hair.

We should also mention the repeated use of chemicals, which if not supplemented by proper supportive hair care can aggravate hair health.

8. I experience intense hair loss after birth, should I be concerned?

A number of women experience Telogen Effluvium about 3 months after birth, due to alterations in hormonal levels. High levels of estrogens and progesterone during pregnancy maintain a higher than normal percentage of hair in Anagen Phase. After birth, the recession in hormonal levels forces hair to enter Telogen Phase. This can lead to massive hair shedding.

9. Is hair transplantation performed to women?

Yes, our hair transplantation techniques can be performed both in men and women. Women have increased needs for density and we are aiming at a more demanding aesthetic result. But the most important step is hair loss diagnosis, in order to define the cause of hair loss, as there are cases where hair transplantation might not have permanent results, e.g. hormonal problems.

10. Which is the appropriate hair loss treatment when facing hormonal problems?

Hormonal disorders are a frequent cause of female hair loss and timely diagnosis is of utmost importance. The doctor should indicate the appropriate medicine treatment in order to balance the hormone levels and then hair will regrow.
Hormonal disorders require systematic and regular observation, as any possible relapse could lead again to hair loss.

11. Does iron insufficiency affect hair loss?

Iron insufficiency is the most frequent nutritional deficiency. Approximately 70% of women experiencing hair loss have at the same time low iron supplies. But in no case should iron be received without medical advice.
Hair loss due to nutritional deficiency is a reversible phenomenon and has no permanent effect. Hair can be restored by replacing the essential elements.

12. Can I undergo hair transplantation if I am wearing a toupee?

If the cause of hair loss is determined and you are a suitable candidate for hair transplantation- which means that you have adequate donor area supply for the coverage of the thinning area, then you can move ahead confidently to hair transplantation. A personal examination by the doctor will ascertain this. You can carry on wearing the toupee after the procedure (but not before 1 week after the procedure and with special care in order to protect transplanted hair) until the new hair starts growing. The same goes for wigs.
